Complex Trauma

What is complex trauma?

The word Trauma is used in Orthopaedic surgery when there is any injury to the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons or muscles. If the injury is severe enough which can threaten the survival of limb or joint it comes under the category of Complex Orthopaedic Trauma.

When and what kind of complex trauma surgery may be needed?

Complex trauma Surgeries are usually performed in an emergency situations. When anyone of us is involved in road traffic accident (RTA) or fall from a significant height she/he may suffer from complex/severe injuries and in that situation she/he will require the help of a Complex trauma & orthopaedic Surgeon (an expert Orthopaedic Surgeon) to perform technically demanding Complex Trauma Surgery to correct the deformity and fix the bones or joints by using special types of instruments and devices (plates, screws, rods or any other special type of implants). He may repair or reconstruct the soft tissues such as ligaments, tendons or muscles using special types of techniques and suture materials if that is needed to be done.

What are the benefits of this surgery?

This surgery is usually done in emergency situation, and the duration of surgery varies depending on the number and severity of injuries.

The aim of surgery in complex trauma cases is to get the patient back on his/her feet as quickly as possible so that he/she can resume the normal life.

Getting this surgery on timely basis by a specialist trauma surgeon is usually associated with good results and long-term disability can be avoided and patient can return to absolutely normal life as he/she was before the injury.
